If asked which organ in your body you want to protect the most, which one would you choose? Some might choose their skin or brain, but many choose their heart. Why would they want to protect something they’ve never seen or touched but can only hear? Because we always want to protect what is important to us.
Similarly, if a relationship is important to you, you want to protect it.
Do you believe long-distance relationships can survive? Think about it. What if your circumstances change suddenly? Would you break up with your partner because they are moving away?
What if you were moving? Would you like to be broken up with? Or would you find a way to make it work?
When the pandemic hit, we all had to stay far away from our friends and family. What was the effect? It brought the whole world closer together.
Long-distance relationships can succeed. Have you tried before and failed? These exciting techniques will help you make your long-distance relationship work.
Try these exciting techniques:
1. Plan your communication. You’re probably thinking, “Well, of course, who doesn’t know the importance of communication?” In long-distance relationships, it’s important to plan in advance.
- You may have different ideas of why or how to keep in touch. Their schedule may be tighter or more flexible than you think.
- You also want to make your communication count, especially if you do not have enough time to chat.
- During the day, you can jot down specific things you want to share with your partner, so you don’t forget.
- Share your emotions with each other. Suppose you are angry, vent. If you’re sad, cry. If you’re happy, laugh. Discuss digital intimacy with your partner. Not everyone feels comfortable exchanging certain photos, phone sex, or webcam use.
- Use this time to set boundaries. These conversations can be awkward, but they help build intimacy.
2. Vary ways of communicating. It’s evident that despite making all those plans, you can still only talk through mobile phones and video chat, so can you make that more exciting? It seems like recent apps were made just for you. So switch it up.
- You can choose to use Snapchat for sharing intimate videos and photos, Facebook messenger or Instagram for work or school-related conversations, the Zoom app for dates, and so on. Non-digital ways can also work well. Try to be innovative.
- Send a surprise letter or package. Make a journal or scrapbook and send it back and forth while each of you fills it up with your thoughts, pictures, and good memories.
3. Create the best dates. Do dates have to be boring because you live far from each other? Not at all. No one will make it fun for you except you. What kind of dates can you plan with your partner? You can even work on different hobbies. One can play the piano while the other sings.
- Plan romantic virtual date nights and prepare for them. Dress up, put on romantic tunes, light candles, and set out food and wine.
- Try a cooking date, go grocery shopping together, buy the same ingredients, and set up the camera so you can see each other. It is an excellent opportunity to talk and laugh.
- You can plan movie dates and game nights, take a stroll while talking about your surroundings, take pictures, and even work on different hobbies together. You can make fun TikTok videos together. All these are doable. What other exciting things can you think of?
4. Set goals and achieve them together. Do you want to see each other improve while forming a closer bond? You can help each other grow with realistic goals. You can set the goal of proving to everyone that your relationship will succeed. It will only motivate you to work hard at it.
- Sharing how you’re working on reaching these goals gives you something to talk about.
- Try a fun challenge of putting money aside every time you think about each other for a month and use that money to plan a visit.
5. Plan your next meeting. Isn’t that exciting? After long weeks, months, maybe years of waiting and trying to keep up with each other’s plans and schedules, you can see each other again! How can you make this exciting? Make it a big deal. Save, shop, and plan activities.
- You could plan to spend a whole day at home together, doing little things like making breakfast, performing chores together, and cuddling on a couch while watching a movie.
- Plan to intentionally leave some reminders of yourself, such as your clothes, books, and perfume for your partner.
- Rather than rushing from one activity to the other, planning your next meeting will make you feel more connected.
Are you excited now? Is your notepad full, and are you ready to implement these new ideas? Very likely you are. Long-distance relationships are not for everyone and require work, but you can do it.
Just like how you will protect your heart, safeguard your relationship. You can spice up your loving relationship no matter where you are.
